I think the research has showed me that the secret police in Russia has a long history and how it wa both similar and different from intelligence agencies in other countries. KGB and its predecessors possessed both domestic and foreign power and this led the secret police to become the most important organ of the newly emerged Soviet Union. The origins of KGB with the Oprichniki and Okhrana shows that the idea of a secret police that abuses its power was not something new but rather was built deeply in the Russian politics. The secret police continued to grow and became stronger after the Revolution because the Revolution was not truly democratic and therefore leaders like Lenin and Dzerzhinsky feared that revolution had to be protected from enemies of Bolsheviks. There was however another complicated relationship between the secret police and the Russian state because rest of the organs of government often feared the influence of the secret police and there was an overall paranoia about control because many Russian leaders felt the need to absolutely secure their power. The secret police therefore went through many changes and reorganization issues. Unlike the other Russian agencies, the secret police played a huge role in foreign affairs as well. Most notably, the secret police placed agents in other countries to gain information about nuclear weapons. This continued into the Cold War as well. In addition, the secret police also influenced American politics because there was a Red Fear exaggerated by McCarthy and Hoover that the communists would take over through their secret police if not contained. This is interesting because CIA also played a role in controlling governments in third world countries. My research also focused on how the KGB is perceived and even though it was involved in a lot of horrible crimes, it was almost matched by secret agencies in US as well.
